
Course: Epidemiology
Aim of the course
Aim of this
module is to learn the basic principles of epidemiology and to understand the
epidemiological line of reasoning. This course will help the participants to better
understand epidemiological publications and the strengths and weaknesses of
epidemiological research.
Content of the course
The course
consists of interactive class sessions in which the tutor will present the course material. The class sessions will be
scheduled in the morning and early afternoon. The course material is described
in the course syllabus. During the week several simple assignments will be made
in the late afternoon and evening on an individual basis. These assignments are
very practical and will require some calculations on a hand calculator. The
assignments will be discussed in class during the morning sessions.
The contents
of the course is a mix of theoretical concepts and practical issues and
assignments. The reference book for the module is: Modern Epidemiology. Kenneth
Rothman, Little, Brown and Company ISBN 0-316-75776-4. This book is rather
expensive. It is recommended to borrow it from your library.
Examination
After each
week a written exam will be given.
