Introduction

Course: General Toxicology

Aim of the course

The aim of the course is twofold. In the first place, it offers participants seeking vocational training but lacking formal undergraduate training in toxicology the opportunity to obtain extensive, basic theoretical knowledge in this field. This basic knowledge is necessary to successfully complete the other, more specialized modules of the programme. Secondly, this module can serve as a refresher course for PhD students and others who intend to take only some of the other programme modules.

This introductory course will therefore ensure that in the end all PET students will have the same basic knowledge of toxicology.

Content of the course

The course consists of twenty three lectures on various subjects, given by experts in those subjects. These subjects relate to most of the chapters in the textbook "Toxicology: Principles & Applications", developed by Eurotox and the Open University. The lectures are intended to help participants to become acquainted with the most important toxicological issues. The book is not obliged, but recommended and will be made available to participants at cost price. The course is only offered by a CD-ROM for self-study.

Examination

Participants will be examined after appointment with the coordinator. The examination will consist of ten open questions formulated by the lecturers and will take place in Wageningen.

Module outcomes (competences, skills)

On successful completion of the module, participants should:

·         have acquired basic knowledge and understanding of the general principles of toxicology

·         have acquired basic insight in the application of toxicology in hazard and risk assessment
